Banded Rail – Habitat Study

September 2nd, 2020

PhD candidate Jacques de Satge has spent much of the last year tracking and monitoring banded rail in New Zealand’s northern harbours. Multiple footprint surveys consistently found banded rail prints within interior mangrove habitat, while prints were found less frequently along the seaward edge of mangroves and were largely absent from adjacent mudflat habitats. Initial results from GPS tracking data of two individuals in Mangawhai Harbour align with these findings; the tracked individuals foraged widely within mangroves, and were observed to roost both in mangroves and adjacent rush-saltmarsh.
