Birds New Zealand condemns racism and supports diversityJune 23rd, 2020
The Council of Birds New Zealand is watching with sadness and grave concern as events in the United States of America unfold. We have seen the media coverage showing violence directed towards African-Americans, all too often with fatal consequences. We stand with other scientific societies from America and around the world in condemning racism and discrimination.
Our own country, Aotearoa New Zealand, is not free from racism and discrimination. As a scientific society, we welcome, support and promote diverse views and people in ornithology. We will continue to work to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. However, these are but the first steps of a journey towards a more inclusive and diverse Birds New Zealand. We invite all members to do whatever they can to help achieve this, and seek your suggestions on actions that Council could take ensure that anyone with an interest in New Zealand birds is encouraged to join, and is made welcome.
