The bobwhite quail introduced to New Zealand now only persisting in scattered populations in the Wairoa-Waikaremoana area, belong to the western prairie form, the plains bobwhite,
Colinus virginianus taylori Lincoln. The introduced birds came from Kansas and/or the old Indian Territory around 1900. This bird ought in future to be called bobwhite quail and not Virginian quail.
